Stockton Heth Tyler, 79, a retired bank executive, died March 25, 1996, at his home after a long illness.
He was the son of S. Heth and Nell Serpell Tyler. A lifelong resident of Tidewater, he graduated from Maury High School and attended Washington and Lee University. He served in World War II and was assigned to the SEABEE Unit in the South Pacific. He began his banking career with Seaboard Citizens National Bank and retired as senior vice president of its successor, Crestar Bank.
Mr. Tyler was long active in community affairs, including the United Way, The Norfolk Forum, and Medical Center Hospitals (Sentara). He served on the boards of Stewart Sandwiches and Berkley Machine and Iron Works. In addition he served on the boards of the Virginia Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Princess Anne Country Club and was a member of the Norfolk German Club.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Caroline Selden Grandy Tyler; and three daughters, Caroline Tyler Watson (Mrs. John W. Byrd) of Alexandria, Sallie Carter Tyler, also of Alexandria, Nellie Tyler McCabe (Mrs. Michael W. McCabe) of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Mrs. Vincent G. Thomas of Lynchburg, Mrs. B. Randolph Whittle of Onancock, and Mrs. Robert C. Hooper of Cambridge; Mass. Mr. Tyler is also survived by three grandchildren, Stockton Tyler Watson of Nashville, Tenn., Ruth Wingate Watson of Virginia Beach, and Michael W. McCabe Jr. of Virginia Beach.
A funeral service will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church, Thursday, March 28, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John D. Burley officiating and internment immediately following at the Galilee Columbarium. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451 or a charity of choice.
