A 9-year-old boy was hit by a truck on Interstate 64 near Military Highway on Tuesday afternoon after he apparently darted across the highway, state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame reported.
The boy, who was not identified, suffered a broken leg, a possible concussion and cuts and bruises. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Van Dame said. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police praised the driver of the large truck for reacting quickly.
When he saw the child run into the westbound center lane, he swerved into the road shoulder, but the side of the truck hit the boy.
Shortly before the accident, the boy's mother reported him missing from their home near the highway, Van Dame said. Then police received several calls about a boy on the interstate throwing rocks at vehicles.
The driver was not charged. The boy faces possible charges for throwing rocks on the highway, a felony, Van Dame said.
