The pair of nesting ospreys at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is back and busily rebuilding and refurbishing its nest. The nest is in an abandoned Navy beacon tower on aquarium grouds and is visible to the public by way of an all-weather video camera focused on the nest. Nest rebuilding, mating, egg laying, incubation, hatching, chick rearing and fledgling activities can be observed during the six or seven months.
Last year the state-operated aquarium developed a new exhibit focused around the nest. The exhibit highlights the environmental conservation efforts that resulted in the dramatic comeback of the osprey or fish hawk.
``The osprey returned earlier this year than usual,'' said Joe Malat, the exhibit curator. ``They usually arrive during the second week of March, but this year they were back before the end of February.''
The live osprey can be viewed weekdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday hours are 1-5 p.m.
