MAURY LOOKS TO HAVE THE EDGE; BOOKER T., GRANBY WILL CHALLENGE

Maury looks to be the strength in Eastern District girls soccer again after advancing to the Eastern Region quarterfinals last season.

The Commodores are led by Shwante Snead, whose 25 goals and seven assists last season made her a first-team All-Tidewater pick. Senior halfback Katie Roman was the Player of the Year in the district last year. Junior forward Amy Mayer, first team All-Region, had 28 goals and 19 assists last season.

``We are playing the No. 1, 2 and 3 teams in the area last year,'' said Commodores coach R.J. Mayer. ``With our experience, we look forward to doing well in the regional tournament this year.''

Booker T. Washington and Granby will be Maury's major competition within the district.

Elsewhere in Hampton Roads, Great Bridge and Western Branch are favorites in the Southeastern District. In the Beach, Cox remains the team to beat.
