WEEKEND

AFRICAN ART is a living art. All those gorgeous staffs and masks and power figures have a function in the life of the community.

That's the perspective of the exhibit ``Spirit of the Motherland: African Art,'' on view through May 5 at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. The 50 or so masks, sculpture, jewelry and textiles, some of which date back 600 years, are on loan from The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.

Public programs have been scheduled to further bring these objects to life. At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, professional storyteller Rex Ellis will engage visitors with African-American cultural tales. At 2:30 p.m. Sunday, a gallery tour takes place, followed by a 3 p.m. performance by Christopher Newport University's gospel group Chosen.

All events are free. The center is at 101 Museum Dr., Newport News. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Call 596-8175.
