The Portsmouth Fire Department has announced it recently promoted 14 of its personnel:
Rondall L. Early, a 7 1/2-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Early, assigned to Fire Station 12, drives and operates Engine 12. Previous awards include a Unit Citation for Achievements of the Honor Guard and a Unit Citation for Achievements of the Hazardous Material Team.
Homer M. Gilbert III, a 10 1/2-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Gilbert is assigned to the Training Division, where he supervises the training needs of the department. Gilbert is also an adjunct instructor for the Department of Fire Programs for the commonwealth of Virginia.
Brian K. Harrell, a 10-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Harrell is assigned to Fire Station 9 on Hodges Ferry Road.
Dale L. Harrington, a six-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Harrington, assigned to Station 11, operates an engine. He has a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Longwood College and has had training in hazardous material, shock trauma and heavy tactical rescue.
Roy L. Herrin, a 21-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to captain. Assigned to Station 11, Herrin supervises the fire company and plans and directs fire attack and rescue operations. Previously Herrin has been recognized as a Firefighter of the Year. His unit has also been awarded a Unit Citation for the Achievements of the Honor Guard.
Tyrees P. Jones, a nine-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Jones, assigned to Station 4 in Port Norfolk, is the apparatus officer for Engine 4. He has received special training in heavy tactical rescue and heavy vehicle rescue and is working on an associate's degree in public protective services.
Janet C. McDaniel, a four-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Assigned to Station 10 on Victory Boulevard, McDaniel operates and maintains apparatus, firefighting equipment and emergency medical equipment. McDaniel was selected the Portsmouth Firefighter of the Year for 1995 and second place Team Leader for 1995.
Linwood G. Metzger, an 11-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. He is assigned to Station 11 in Cradock.
James R. Robey Jr., an eight-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Robey is assigned to Station 14 in Port Norfolk, where he drives and operates fire apparatus and performs supervisory work. Previously, he has received a Unit Citation for the Achievements of the Hazardous Material Team and a Meritorious Service Award.
Mark Rogers, an eight-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Assigned to Station 6, Rogers drives and operates fire apparatus. He is a hazardous-materials specialist and an Emergency Medical Technician.
Brian K. Russell, a six-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Russell is assigned to Station 12 on Cedar Lane, where he maintains fire apparatus and is a pump operator on fireground. In addition, Russell is an Instructor 1, Officer 1 and Incident Safety Officer.
Michael I. Stockton, a 3 1/2-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Stockton, assigned to Station 1, is a fire apparatus operator and driver. He is a hazardous-materials specialist and has received a Unit Citation for the Achievements of the Hazardous Materials Team.
Steven D. Wells, a 10-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to lieutenant. Wells is assigned to Station 4.
John C. Whitehurst, an 18-year veteran of the department, has been promoted to captain. He is assigned to Station 6, where he directs and supervises fire company operations. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
