PRINCIPAL'S PLAN SETS EXAMPLE

S.H. Clarke Academy Principal Daisy M. Murphy, the school's social worker and a Clarke PTA leader represented Portsmouth Tuesday at the National Association of Elementary School Principals' national convention in Washington.

Association leaders picked Murphy's proposal on boosting community involvement as one they wanted to share with other participants in a session titled ``Promoting Strong School/Community Relations.''

In her first year as Clarke principal, Murphy has introduced several initiatives that have excited parents and students. For example, parents can attend school-based workshops designed to help them improve skills. And in one of many attempts to strengthen bonds between the school and the surrounding community, students involved in a gardening club have donated crops to needy families. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
