Area bowlers fared well in the 65th annual Virginia State Duckpin Tournament, which concluded Sunday at Victory Lanes.
The four-weekend tournament had five local champions.
Don Ferguson was a double winner, coincidentally in doubles. Ferguson paired with Van Malone for 991 to win men's doubles and joined with Martha Rush to take first place in mixed doubles with 1,013.
Bev Coles and Judy Wright won women's doubles with 1,021. Miriam Pugh of Suffolk topped women's singles with 538.
The Alley Cats, another local entry, won team honors with 1,735. Team members were Martha Rush, Ann Sharrett, Catherine Charlton and Grace Brinkley. There was only a single team category - for men, women and mixed teams.
Earl Paine, from Northern Virginia, prevented a Hampton Roads sweep of individual honors by taking men's singles with 524.
All-events winners will be announced next week.
Next up for the duckpinners is the National Tournament, which will be held in Linthicum, Md., at Fair Lanes Southwest beginning May 19. It will continue through June 16.
Both the state and national youth tournaments will be bowled in this area. The state tourney will be at Victory Lanes April 13-14. The national tournament will be at Bowlarama June 21-23.
Bowler of the Week honors go to Todd Allred.
Allred shattered the house record for a three-game series at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven with a powerful 832 series in the Monday Earlybirds Tenpin League. It broke the old record by 21.
Todd posted games of 300, 279 and 253. It was the sixth 300 game chalked up at Lynnhaven by Allred. He opened his series with 20 consecutive strikes before leaving a solid No. 10 pin in the ninth frame of the second game.
Allred competed in another league afterward, the Monday Trio, and shot a 702 series. For the six games that night, he averaged 255.7.
Tenpin topics: Junior bowler Malcolm Foust notched a 300 game in the Saturday Youth League at Indian River. Cully Culpepper banged out a 300 in his 703 series in the Big Chiefs League at the same center. Dean Stephens racked up a 300 in the middle of his 691 series in the Commercial/Divisional League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . A six-hit on his last pitch deprived Fred Olive of a possible 300 game. He hit 296 in the Thursday Men's League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Bob Consa chalked up a triplicate 130 in the Friday Misfits League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . Kathy Sartain slammed a 661 series in the Tuesday Nite Mixed League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . Mark Kelly joined the exclusive 800 Club with an 804 series in the Funseekers League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. . . . Glen Tribble just missed 800 Club membership with 795 in the Federal Mixed League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. He also fired 756 in the Monday Scratch Doubles League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. in the Friday's Finest League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. He put together games of 244, 234 and 225. . . . Joe Namer tossed a 279 game in the Thursday Mixed League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . Leslie Livesay's 655 series in the Charles Peete League at Pinboy's of Norfolk was highlighted by a 277 game. In the same league, Teri Jeske blasted a 662 series. . . . Two of the area's finest bowlers are departing. Rick and Kim Phillips are moving to Mississippi. League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake, rolling a 151. . . . In the Seagate Colony Senior League at Pinboy's at the Beach, Nancy Goolsby boosted her 146 average with a 604 series. . . . Teatta Confalone backed up 600 series the past week with 641 in the Commercial/Divisional League and 612 in the Cosmopolitan loop, both at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . The oldest active bowler in the nation is believed to be Walter Rossow of Green Bay, Wis. He is 101. Rossow began bowling at the age of 19. . . . ABC is hiking its sanction fee $2. The increase, to be divided equally between ABC and the local associations, is effective immediately for leagues sanctioning for the summer. . . . Joe Wilson has resigned as president of the Young American Bowling Alliance.
Duckpin data: Charlie Southworth won the ninth annual Oneil Wynne Classic at Bowlarama, the ninth different bowler to win this 7-game handicap tournament. Southworth had a 1,230 total and pocketed $1,000. Charlie Wilkinson was runner-up, earning $500, and Mark Wilkins finished third, winning $250. . . . Six local bowlers have qualified for the national finals of the $15,000 Duckpin Classic in June. Carl Ketchum and Rachael Mumford won spots at Victory Lanes. Ted Nobles, Al Wilkins, Charlie Wilkinson and Nancy Pappas gained berths in qualifying at Bowlarama. . . . The chevron-winning 5-7-10 spare was made by Warren Faison in the Suffolk Mixed Nuts League and Vance Pittman in the Sunday School League. . . . Deepest sympathy to Bill Wetherington on the loss of his father. . . . The youth state tournament has drawn so many entries that it will be held over a two-day period instead of April 13 only. . . . Jim Boykin picked up the tough 9-10 spare in the Industrial League. . . . In the Monday Nite Ladies League Vera Briggs, who averages 107, tossed a 163 game and Delis Soule, a 91-average bowler, shot a 152. . . . Biggest smile in the state tournament belonged to Eric Alexie after his 174 game in team competition. Alexie averages 104. by CNB
