THROUGH THE YEARS - VIRGINIA BEACH

This crowd gathered April 26, 1928 for the annual Cape Henry

Pilgrimage. The ceremonies marked the 320th anniversary of the first

landing of the first permanent English colonists April 26, 1607 on

what is now Fort Story. The wooden cross in the center was replaced

by the permanent two-ton granite Memorial Cross in 1935. The annual

ceremony routinely drew Virginia governors. Gov. Harry F. Byrd set

the precedent at the 1926 ceremony organized by the Assembly of

Tidewater Virginia Women. An Easter sunrise service is also held at

the cross each year.

This year's service will be at 6:42 a.m. Easter Sunday. In the

event of inclement weather, the service will be held at 7 a.m. at

the First Presbyterian Church, 36th Street and Pacific Avenue.
