Col. James E. Smith USAF Ret., 74, of Daffodil Crescent, died March 29, 1996, in Hampton.
Born in Chicago, he retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1972 where he worked in Air Weather Service. He was also a meteorologist with WAVY-TV for five years. He graduated as a cadet in meteorology from California Institute of Technology, received a Master of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He taught meteorology at Old Dominion University and taught aviation meteorology and math at Tidewater Community College, Chesapeake Campus.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Smith; daughter, Karel Wetzel of Virginia Beach; three sons, James R. Smith of Virginia Beach; Robert E. Smith of Hampton; and George J. Smith of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Kristen Wetzel and Jason Wetzel, both of Virginia Beach, Richard Smith of England, Kimberly Smith of Virginia Beach and Alec Smith of Hampton; two great-grandchildren, Angel Smith and Joshua Smith, both of England; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Langley Air Force Base Main Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery on April 11 at 10 a.m. Visitation will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Nursing Home Care Unit at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Va. 23667.
