SEWER SERVICE FOR WINDSOR IS AT LEAST A YEAR AWAY, OFFICIALS SAY

Although construction on the lines that will connect the town to the Hampton Roads Sanitation District system is slated to begin this summer, sewer service is still at least a year away, Town Manager Jim DuGrand said.

HRSD officials have estimated it would take another 12 to 18 months before Windsor can join into the regional wastewater treatment system, DuGrand told Town Council members at last week's meeting.

In other business, the council was asked to endorse Norfolk Southern Corp.'s request to close one of two railroad crossings - either the one on state Route 603 or the one on state Route 610.

DuGrand said the railroad company is responsible for the upkeep on both crossings and would like to reduce costs by closing one.

Before the company can close any of its crossings, it must first garner the support of both the Town Council and the Virginia Department of Transportation. A public hearing will be held before the council makes any decision.

DuGrand said the 1996-97 budget will go before council next month. by CNB
