JULIA W. YATES

Julia Wilkins Yates, 84, died April 15, 1996, at her home at Westminster Canterbury in Virginia Beach, where she had lived since 1983.

She was born in Cape Charles, Va., on Dec. 7, 1911. She attended Sweetbriar College. In 1933 she married Truman Grove Rumberger. They spent most of their married life in Alexandria, Va., where she was a member of Belle Haven Country Club and active in church work at Immanuel Church-on-the Hill. Mr. Rumberger died in 1959. From 1963 to 1968 she worked for the Rev. Bishop Samuel B. Chilton as his secretary. In 1969, she married Edward M. Yates, who passed away in 1980. After moving to Virginia Beach in 1983, she became a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Yates is survived by her brother, F. Tucker Wilkins of Eastville; her two sons, Tucker Wilkins Rumberger of Smith's Beach, Va., and William Nottingham Rumberger of Virginia Beach; her grandchildren, Julie R. Settlemyer of Hickory, N.C., Robert Wilkins of Houston, Texas, Carolyn Wilkins Rumberger and Kristin Elaine Rumberger of Alexandria, Va.; and her great-grandson, Christian Ryan Wilkins of Houston, Texas.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hungars Episcopal Church Cemetery in Bridgetown, Va. with the Rev. Harry Crandall officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday or Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Fox and James Funeral Home, Eastville. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The American Cancer Society in care of Mrs. Benjamin Mears Jr. in Eastville, 23347.
