A. Fred Matthews, 62, of the 3800 block of Jackson Road, died April 2, 1996, at Obici Hospital.
Mr. Matthews, a retired electrician, worked for Newport News Shipyard for 29 years. He was a native of Bertie County, N.C., and a member of the Salvation Army. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Judith A. Matthews; two daughters, Cynthia A. Matthews and Allison K. Matthews, both of Suffolk; a stepdaughter, Lara J. Matthews of Suffolk; three sons, Billy W. Branch of Greenville, Texas, Frederick S. Matthews and Delray Matthews, both of Suffolk; two stepsons, Shawn J. Merriman and Niki L. Merriman, both of Suffolk; his mother, Carrie D. Matthews of Pendleton, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley M. Parker of Pendleton, N.C., and Irene M. Williamson of Suffolk; three brothers, Col. J.B. Matthews of Alexandria, Va., James A. Matthews of Fredericksburg, Va., and Leslie H. Matthews of Suffolk; and six grandchildren. He was the son of the late Bythel Leggett Matthews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hill Funeral Home by Col. J.B. Matthews and Lt. Joseph Burton. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family in the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and other times in the home of Irene Williamson, 302 Blair St., Suffolk.
