SIGNS OF SPRING MAKE HATS A CROWNING GLORY

Designers have been busy trimming hats with all the signs of spring.

Along with a wide variety of straw colors, designers are using better-quality French silk and grosgrain ribbons to encircle hat crowns, tied in full bows.

With the addition of blooms in silk, satin, straw and velvet, hats can make a big statements.

Says Jim Fields, of Lili's of Ghent in Norfolk, ``This season, hats are flying out of here.''

Shown: A shock of magenta is subdued with grosgrain ribbon and flowers. By Whittall & Shon, $128. Wide-brimmed straw has the surprise of straw flower cluster. By Meril, $148. Both available at Lili's of Ghent.

That Model Look

Hundreds of young teenage girls and young women between lined up at Lynnhaven Mall last month to meet model scouts from the Elite Guess Model Look Contest. Four of them would be chosen to compete in a regional contest at Northern Virginia's Fashion Center at Pentagon City on April 21.

The local winners are: Katie Morisette and Crystal Puckett, of Virginia Beach; Sylvia Rasheeda Perkins, of Norfolk; and Jennifer Renee Rice, of Chesapeake.

The regional event will include a professional fashion show, with the winner going on to New York for the North American finals.

Said one winner, Jennifer Rice of the Wright Agency, ``I just want to approach it one step at a time because you just never know.''

Best of luck to all four models!

Hair apparent

We know that when models want to change their looks, they change their hair.

Take supermodel Linda Evganevangelista - she colored her hair 17 times in five years!

So now, in a season of color, is it any wonder that women are considering a change in hair color - or at least a new cut? I asked a few of the areas top stylists to share their view of the hair forecast for spring:

Madeleine Inscoe of Chez Madeleine, Virginia Beach, cautions clients not to go with a style they've done before: ``Hair has style again. Go with a softer look with less structure if you're older, more structure if you're younger.

``Bouffants for evening have a sophisticated lady-like style. For day, go with a higher crown, a layered short bob or a flip. It must suit the individual.''

Russell Painter of Haircut 100 in Virginia Beach encourages his clients to make a change: ``Cut that shag off or let it grow; create softer layers around the face; and get rid of the red. Rich brunette is the way to go if you're not going to be a blonde this spring.''

Anthony Taflambas of Anthony & Company Hair Design, Norfolk, is looking for dimension in hair color: ``Color is dimensional, using shades that enhance the natural color. If you're looking for chic, go with soft striation created by light and dark colors. Mid-length cuts are popular, using soft layering that caresses the shoulder moving downward.'' Maternity Fashion

Japanese Weekend of San Francisco, a leading force in the maternity industry is coming to Maternity Boutique in Virginia Beach on Saturday, offering a day of informal modeling, helpful seminars on body and skin care and pre-natal planning.
