WHALE'S DEATH INVESTIGATED

ILLUSTRATION: Photo by CHARLIE MEADS, The Virginian-Pilot

Susan Barco of the Virginia Marine Science Museum stranding team

discusses with spectators the possible causes of a 23-foot-long

humpback whale's death. The whale became stranded on a Chesapeake

Beach sandbar Tuesday and was towed to First Landing/Seashore State

Park Wednesday for a necropsy. It's possible the young whale became

lost and couldn't survive.
