Walter ``Kayo'' Emmot, 76, died Wednesday, April 3, 1996, in Mercy Hospital. He was born Feb. 3, 1920, the son of Henry and Rose Pounds Emmot.
He was married to Andrea L. Marshall on March 15, 1941, in Lawrence, Kan. She passed away March 7, 1996. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was inducted into the Kansas Football Hall of Fame at Washburn University and received his master's from Pittsburg State University in Kansas. From 1942-44, Mr. Emmot taught and coached in Wakeeney, Kan. During World War II, he served as quartermaster on a light cruiser with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. In 1946, he came to Independence to teach and coach, where he was an assistant coach under Carl Nelson in football, basketball and track. For the 1949-54 seasons, he coached basketball at Independence High School, and from 1954-66, he was the football coach at IHS. While at IHS, the football team had a record of 91-13-3 and had six consecutive undefeated, untied seasons from 1957-62. The school held a state record of 49 consecutive victories. From 1967-70, he was the head football coach at Independence Community College, then returned to IHS to teach social science until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Emmot is survived by two sons, Dr. William Emmot of Overland Park, Kan., and Raymond Emmot of Independence; a daughter, Dr. Andrea Eason of Sunbury, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Webb & Rodrick funeral Home Chapel, Independence, by the Rev. Ron Oldenettei, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Walter ``Kayo'' Emmot High School Memorial Scholarship Fund.
