CIVIC LEAGUES BACK CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL, SCHOOL BOARD

Two civic leagues have endorsed candidates for City Council and School Board seats.

The West Side Civic League endorsed Leroy Bennett, who wants to represent the Nansemond Borough on the council.

Bennett, chairman of the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, is running against incumbent Richard R. Harris, and T.C. Williams and J. Dodd Brooks.

League President George Cargill said Bennett's experience in community and civic affairs will allow him to be sensitive to citizens' needs.

The Elephant's Fork Civic League endorsed John R. Riddick for the School Board seat of the Nansemond Borough.

Riddick, a former School Board member who is retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, is running against incumbent Chairman Arthur D. Smith.

League President Percie Stagg said Riddick brought the Suffolk school system up to standard and helped to provide new schools when he served as a board member from 1975 to 1981.

There are four other candidates for the School Board: Bruce T. Benn, Robert M. Brooks Jr. and James E. Perkinson, Sleepy Hole Borough; and the Rev. Mark A. Croston Sr., Whaleyville.

The City Council and School Board elections will be held May 7. by CNB
