A BAD BREAK OPENS DOOR FOR STRICKLAND

Arizona State's Ron Riley was hoping to play in tonight's semifinals of the 44th annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.

He's at home instead.

Riley left early Thursday after X-rays showed he broke an ankle in Wednesday's victory by his Dolsey's Ltd. team over WTKR.

``I thought it was just a sprain but it really hurt,'' the 6-foot-5 Riley said.

He has been replaced by Nebraska's Erick Strickland, the most valuable player in the recent National Invitation Tournament.

Dolsey will play defending champion Beach/Barton Ford tonight at 7 at Churchland High School. The 9 p.m. game will match Thursday night's winners, K-Plus and Sales Systems Ltd.

Behind 28 points by NAIA All-American Shawn Harvey of West Virginia State, K-Plus routed Bill Lewis Chevrolet 118-90.

Sales Systems, getting 15 points from Sun Belt Player of the Year Derek Fisher of Arkansas Little Rock and 14 from Mark Pope of NCAA tournament champion Kentucky, downed the Norfolk Naval Shipyard 78-72.

The K-Plus team broke 100 points with 5:55 left in the game on a free throw by Houston's Tim Moore. Moore finished with 26 points.

``This was the kind of game I was hoping to have,'' said the 6-4 Harvey, who carried a 27-point regular-season scoring average. ``I wanted to prove myself, to show I can play with any of these guys.''

Harvey hit 11 of 15 from the floor (including 3 of 4 3-pointers) and 4 of 5 free throws, grabbed nine rebounds and had two assists and one steal.

``Everything was going,'' he said. ``I was in a groove. Maybe they can mark me down as a sleeper.''

Teammate Moore was 10 of 15 from the field and 6 of 10 from the line.

Donta Bright of NCAA tourney runner-up Massachusetts scored 25 points for Bill Lewis Chevrolet.

Sales Systems had four double-figure scorers. Darryl Wilson of Mississippi State had 13 points and Shandon Anderson of Georgia 12. Anderson also snagged 11 rebounds.

The Naval Shipyard was paced by 7-foot Simeon Haley of Missouri with 17 points. Haley grabbed a dozen rebounds.

In the afternoon consolation game, WTKR defeated the Portsmouth Sports Club 81-78. Chris Robinson of Western Kentucky racked up a game-high 25 points for WTKR.

Demetri Hill of Florida and Hampton's J. J. Williams each had 16 for the Sports Club.

Strickland, with only 11 points in two losing games for the eliminated Sports Club, now gets new life with unbeaten Dolsey tonight. by CNB
