A five-car accident on Interstate 64 East on Friday night left at least two people injured and halted heavy holiday traffic for more than an hour, state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said.
The snarl occurred a half-mile east of Fort Eustis Boulevard about 6 p.m. and stalled traffic for several miles.
A 1991 Chevrolet Corsica, driven by Marvin Adkins, 32, failed to stop for slowing traffic and rear-ended a 1986 Oldsmobile, Van Dame said. The Oldsmobile then hit a vehicle in front of it, which, in turn, collided with a fourth car.
The Corsica then spun out of control and struck another car head-on.
James R. Everett, 16, a back-seat passenger in the Oldsmobile, was trapped in the car for about 20 minutes. Everett, of Virginia Beach, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center.
A passenger in the Corsica, Walter Keeton, suffered ``a massive head laceration'' and also was taken to Riverside.
Everett and Keeton were in stable condition Friday night.
Adkins, of Quinton, Va., was charged with driving under the influence.
