I am visiting my granddaughter and her family here in Suffolk, and I do enjoy reading your paper.
I am 89 years old, and I thank God that I still can remember the old days. It was a peaceful world to be in.
Something is wrong today! I place blame on the schools, churches and parents. Taking God and prayers out of the schools was one bad move.
What do young people have to look up to anymore? Today it's freedom to trample and burn our flag! Is this what we call freedom? The mothers who complained about the schools wanting to change to uniforms should take a look at some of these young people who dress like they were going to a Halloween parade! A mother complained about her son being sent home from school because he had spiked his hair. And that was a person called ``mother.''
My parents were God-fearing and loving to nine children. I have written a memory book of my childhood and the world I was brought up in. I want my great-grandchildren to know that there was a world of peace and happiness.
Perhaps if this country would turn to God and prayers again, they would find a far different world for the young people of today. I thank God for my right to pray. And may we also remember that this country was founded under God, with liberty and justice for all.

Allentown, Pa. Leroy Bennett will represent will of people
The West Side Civic League endorses Leroy Bennett to represent the Nansemond Borough on City Council.
Mr. Bennett's long years of experience in civic and community affairs will enable him to identify and seek solutions to the many problems that face the citizens of our district - problems such as mosquitoes breeding in open ditches, inadequate street lighting, street potholes and mudholes, dilapidated and abandoned houses, and recreation for our youth.
We need a councilman who is committed to representing the will of the people, not big business, high-powered land developers who are not concerned about controlled growth in our city or those who believe that everything they don't want in their neighborhood should be dumped in ours.
For all of the above reasons and many more, we endorse Mr. Leroy Bennett.
