NORFOLK ACADEMY PICKED TO WIN AGAIN ANGELA HUCLES IS THE MAJOR REASON FOR THE BULLDOGS' ANTICIPATED SUCCESS.

TWO-TIME Virginian-Pilot Player of the Year, Angela Hucles, a senior forward, is the major reason Norfolk Academy is expected to win another TCIS girls soccer championship. Hucles, who scored 47 goals and had 23 assists last year, was named a Parade All-American this year.

``We remain the team to beat in the TCIS, but I see the TCIS being its strongest ever,'' said Bulldogs coach Kevin Sims, whose team returns six starters. ``We play the most demanding schedule in the state, if not in the country.''

Among the Bulldogs opponents: Eastern District power Maury, Southeastern's District power Great Bridge, last year's Peninsula District champ Tabb, and perhaps the top five programs in Virginia Beach - Cox, Kempsville, First Colonial, Salem and Tallwood.

Sims expects his major competition in the TCIS to come from Norfolk Collegiate and Norfolk Christian.

A look around the rest of the TCIS:

CAPE HENRY COLLEGIATE

Coach: Steve Luoma.

1995 record: 10-10 overall.

Key performers: Tova Cohn (Sr. F); Linda Temuche (Jr. MF); Sara Anton (Jr. SW); Stacie Crain (Jr. GK); Clara Malloon (So. D); Lauron Dixon (So. D); Rene Quarrels (So. M); Kelley Bradley (Jr. M); Chi-Pei Tsend (So. M).

Outlook: Still very young in key positions, however, if certain players play to their potential, Cape Henry should do well in the TCIS. Cape Henry, tied for fourth place last season and should benefit from a spring break trip to England. Cohn, All-Tidewater honorable mention, was the TCIS' second-leading scorer last season with 30 goals. Anton was also an honorable mention selection.

CATHOLIC

Coach: Ed Mazzanti.

1995 record: 1-17 overall, 1-7 district.

Key performers: Margot Demontpellier (Sr. M); Sarah Army (Sr. M); Kim Holdcroft (Jr. FB); Samantha Newton (Jr. M); Kristin Sorenson (Jr. M); Megan Petchel (So. M).

Outlook: With eight starters returning, Mazzanti, a first-year coach, will be developing players for defensive positions and build upon capabilities in the midfield.

NANSEMOND-SUFFOLK

Coach: Tom Gill.

1995 record: 7-12-1 overall.

Key performers: Jill Van Guilder (Sr. M); Betsy Bagnell (Sr. M); Katherine Stewart (Sr. D); Bria O'Berry (Fr. M/F).

Outlook: First-year coach Gill says the team plays one of the toughest schedules in the area. N-SA has experience as 12 of its 17 players are seniors. Van Guilder and Bagnell were first-team All-TCIS last year.

NORFOLK ACADEMY

Coach: Kevin Sims.

1995 record: 18-2-1 overall, 12-0 league.

Key performers: Angela Hucles (Sr. F); Carrie Evans (Sr. MF); Erica Blachman (Sr. B); Katie Deal (Sr. MF); Katie Rowen (Jr. SW); Lizzy Rice (So. F); Clara Sims (So. F).

Outlook: Once again, the team to beat in the TCIS, going for its 11th league title. The Bulldogs have a 137-0-1 record against TCIS competition. Hucles, the leading scorer in school and South Hampton Roads history with 152 career goals, and Evans, with 55 career goals and 47 assists, were first team All-Tidewater as juniors last season. The Bulldogs play the toughest schedule in the state, according to Sims.

NORFOLK CHRISTIAN

Coach: Rich Rose.

1995 record: 14-3-3 overall; 8-2-1 league.

Key performers: Martha Duffey (Sr. M); Apryl Prentiss (Sr. M); Lindsey Phipps (Sr. GK); Kristen Brown (Jr. GK); Courtney Hubbard (So. B); Wendy Strickland (So. M); Mary-Virginia Weissinger (So. M); Samantha Stuart (So. D); Sonny Stommel (Jr. M).

Outlook: The team has a solid nucleus from last year in which the team was a runner-up to Academy in the TCIS. Duffey, first team All-Tidewater last season with 17 goals, will again be the leader and will play where needed. Defense will be led by all-TCIS first team Brown. Stommel is a versatile player with all-TCIS potential.

NORFOLK COLLEGIATE

Coach: Bob Bigney.

1995 record: 13-4-1.

Key performers: Katie Kiefner (Sr. F); Elizabeth Swearingen (Jr. B); Chelsea Dailey (Jr. GK); Brooke Cooper (Fr. M); Christine Aulicino (Fr. M).

Outlook: First-year coach Bigney looks for Collegiate to attack quickly and score many goals. Eight starters return, including Cooper, whose 19 goals and eight assists led the team last season. ILLUSTRATION: TIDEWATER CONFERENCE OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GIRL SOCCER PREVIEW
