Brandi Woodard, a Western Branch senior, was named the Chesapeake Girls Basketball Player of the Year, as voted upon by city coaches. Bruins coach Kim Aston took home coach of the year honors.
Woodard, a 5-foot-11 guard, led the Bruins to a Southeastern District tournament title over Churchland and her team's first Eastern Region appearance with 11.4 points per game and seven rebounds.
Also named to the first team were Great Bridge's LaShelle Griffin and Kalisha Brown; Deep Creek's Anecia Brathwaite; and Western Branch's Millette Green.
Griffin, a senior 5-7 guard/forward, averaged 12.9 points per game for the Wildcats and connected on 41 percent of her shots from the floor. Griffin also chipped in 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.5 steals.
Brown, a senior 5-8 guard, was 34 percent from the field for Great Bridge and averaged 10.3 points per game. Brown also racked up 4.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.2 steals.
Brathwaite, a 5-7 junior forward, averaged 16 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets.
