LOWE'S WILL OFFER FREE LAWN, GARDEN SEMINAR

It's that time of year.

Suburbanites must emerge from their homes and, dread in their hearts, inspect winter's havoc on their yards. Piles of old, dead leaves; weeds running amok; dying shrubs; scraggly, patchy grass.

If they're lucky, their neighbors' yards look as bad or worse than their own. Chances are, though, there's an overachiever on the block, whose flower beds already are mulched and showing blooms, whose lawn already is a soft, verdant carpet.

Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse may have some help for the botanically challenged.

The hardware superstore on North Battlefield Boulevard will offer a free lawn and garden seminar April 20.

Jim Bennett, a garden specialist from Southern Living magazine, will conduct the all-day workshop.

Bennett, who lives in Georgia, will give folks tips on everything from creating beautiful lawns to planting annuals and perennials.

Bennett, in his fifth season as a Southern Living garden specialist, also created and hosted the 13-year television program ``Weekend Gardener.'' He's a former instructor for the University of Georgia's master gardener program.

Bennett's seminar is designed for a wide audience, from novices to seasoned gardeners. The workshops will be held in an outdoor tent.

The schedule:

Sensational spring lawns, 10 a.m.

Make your backyard beautiful, noon

Creating color with annuals and perennials, 2 p.m.

Specialty and container gardening, 4 p.m. by CNB
