Charlie V. Gaskins Jr., 79, affectionately known as Mr. Poo, of the 100 block of Sandpiper Drive, died April 7, 1996, in a Portsmouth hospital.
He was a retired leading man in Electrician Shop 99 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was born and raised in Portsmouth and was twice widowed - first by his wife of 39 years, Evelyn K. Gaskins, and later by his second wife of 10 years, Louise Gaskins. He was a member of Earl Edwards Magic Ring where he was both a magician and a clown. He was a volunteer at Maryview Hospital and a member of Beazley Foundation. He was also a member of Maryview Auxiliary and the Portsmouth Polygon Club.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret ``Peggy'' Beasley of Rustburg, Va.; son, Charles V. Gaskins II and his wife, April; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Fiorita of Vandalia, Ohio, Scott Beasley of Houston, Texas, Christopher Gaskins of Virginia Beach, and Evelyn Gaskins, Michelle Gaskins, Donna Barnes, and Katie Barnes, all of Portsmouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday by Minister Keith Lewis in West Park Church of Christ. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Snellings Funeral Home. Charlie's life touched many people and he will be missed by all. ILLUSTRATION: Personal photo
