JAMES E. DOWNS

James Everson Downs, 68, died Monday, April 8, 1996, in his son's home in Chesapeake.

He was born in Haywood County, N.C., where he was a resident for eight years. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Norfolk and was active with Gloucester Senior Center with Meals on Wheels. He also attended Newington Baptist Church in Gloucester.

He was head lineman and in charge of new construction before retiring from the Norfolk office of Virginia Power in 1986 after 35 years. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Warren J. and Kathy Downs of Chesapeake; two sisters, Francis Downs Clark of Newport News and Mable Downs MeHaffey of Waynesville, N.C.; a half-brother, Albert Rhoades Downs of Clyde, N.C.; and grandchildren, Matthew James Downs and Andrew McCain Downs of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Newington Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Gray and Fred Brazwell. Burial will be in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Andrews Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7274 Joseph Lewis Road, Hayes, Va. 23072, c/o Mrs. G. Edward Mowry. Andrews Funeral Home is in charge.
