CHILLY WINDS PUT BRAKES ON PIER FISHING

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow Tuesday. Chilly winds and overcast conditions kept most fishermen indoors.

Fishermen who braved the cool temperatures found fish uncooperative because of cold, dirty water.

Action was slow on Rodanthe Pier and Avon Pier, where only a few skates were taken.

Frisco Pier, on the southern part of Hatteras Island, reported a fair amount of action. Some toadfish, a few croakers, one keeper gray trout and a small black drum were landed.

Surf-fishing along the beach from Corolla to Buxton was slow. At Cape Point a few toadfish and puppy drum were beached Monday evening and Tuesday. Some toadfish and small croakers were landed in the Frisco area Tuesday afternoon.

Some striped bass of mixed sizes were taken and released Monday by anglers casting and trolling adjacent to the Manns Harbor Bridge across Croatan Sound. White and yellow bucktails were the most effective bait.

Striped bass action in Croatan Sound should remain fairly good as long as cool weather continues.

The Pirates Cove and Oregon Inlet fishing center fleets remained at the dock Tuesday because of the weather.

A few charters fished off Hatteras, landing fairly good catches of tuna and a few dolphin. Most of the fish were taken in deep water.

The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 46 degrees Tuesday. The water temperature at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island was 48 degrees. by CNB
