RAIN AND SLEET EXTEND WINTER'S GRIP, BUT WARM RELIEF IS ON WAY

Winter weather just won't give up.

As a late season northeaster continued to slink along the northern East Coast, Hampton Roads was brushed Tuesday night with a brief mixture of light rain and sleet.

But forecasters said we may get a reward for bearing with the winter weather that has overstayed its welcome. It will still be nippy today, but temperatures are expected to rebound into the 70s and possibly low 80s by the end of the week.

That will be quite a change from the cold, wet weather Hampton Roads has dealt with for several days.

Some New England cities reported record snowfalls as the winter storm - aided by a low pressure center off the coast - continued to pull moisture out of the Atlantic. Cold temperatures have not helped.

There were reports of some snow in western Virginia and parts of North Carolina. The Washington /Baltimore region suffered a snow/rain mixture, while several inches of snow fell in parts of Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania.

But forecasters said temperatures currently warming the country's Midwest are expected to slide east just in time for the weekend.

The forecast calls for:

Today: Partly sunny, breezy and cool. Highs in the lower 50s. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph.

Tonight: Clear and cold. Lows in the upper 30s. West winds 10 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid to upper 60s.

Extended: Partly sunny Friday and Saturday with a high about 80 Friday and 75 Saturday. by CNB
