Norfolk Sports Club Metro Players of the Year Kevin Jones of Tallwood and Katie MacPhail of Western Branch head up the first All-Eastern Region volleyball teams, selected by area coaches.
Western Branch dominated balloting by placing three girls and one boy on the first teams and two boys on the second team.
MacPhail, a senior, joined Bruin teammates Amanda Adkins, a senior, and junior Cathy Arnette; Indian River senior Jennifer Burns; Salem sophomore Jenny Harmon; and First Colonial junior Alija Pittenger on the girls' first team.
The boys' first team consisted of Jones, a junior; Tallwood senior Chuck Beeson; Western Branch senior Josh Brinkley; Kellam sophomore Jeremy Clardy; Cox senior Kevin Riley; and Kempsville senior Brian Smith.
Jones converted 90 percent of his serves, scored 13 aces and collected 260 kills, 170 digs and 55 solo blocks to lead the Lions to the Beach District regular-season and tournament titles and the Eastern Region crown.
MacPhail had an 87 serving percentage with 39 aces and accumulated 118 kills, 33 digs, 33 blocks and 51 assists as the Southeastern District champion Bruins finished second in the Eastern Region tournament.
Salem junior Bronwyn Blair, Cox junior Katherine Dunford, Great Bridge senior Jill Ferguson, Tallwood sophomore Sara Neaves, Indian River junior Quiana White and Kempsville junior Emerald Zemedkun were on the second team.
Great Bridge senior Mark Higginbotham and sophomore Bradford Tibbs, Western Branch senior Andrew Powers, First Colonial senior Scott Schneider, Western Branch senior Eric Steinfort and Indian River junior Brian Peterson were selected to the boys' second team. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
