Area Group AA teams made a good impression upon Group AAA schools in tournaments last week.
The Nansemond River baseball team finished second in the Papa John's Invitational tournament at Greenbrier Christian, while Lakeland came in third at the Pizza Hut Invitational at Indian River.
The Warriors' softball team finished third in the Papa John's Invitational.
``We didn't have a whole lot of pressure on us,'' Lakeland coach Ron Robertson said of facing Group AAA teams. ``We were using (the tournament) as practice, to get our bats going. We did against triple-A pitching so I'm pleased with that.''
The Cavaliers (3-3) scored 26 runs in winning two of three games in the tournament.
The Nansemond River baseball team (5-1) had an early five-game winning streak snapped when it fell 5-0 in the title game to Greenbrier Christian.
SOCCER DERBY: The Nansemond River and Lakeland soccer teams will play each other in the Columbus Soccer Derby in a non-district game on Monday at 7 p.m. at Lakeland. The winner will be awarded the Discovery Cup by the Knights of Columbus Suffolk Council 7363. The winner displays the Cup for one month, while members of the winning team will receive medals.
The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal Catholic service organization, created the Discovery Cup in 1992 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the new world.
GAME OF THE WEEK: In track, Nansemond River, Lakeland and Smithfield are three of 76 high school teams slated to compete in the Captain's Classic Relays at Christopher Newport University in Newport News on Saturday. Group AAA teams will make up one division of competition, while Group AA, A and private schools will be combined in another division. The meet starts at 8 a.m. and admission is free. by CNB
