John Rector Garton, 70, the son of the late Dr. Alfred Clarke Garton and Jollette Rector Garton, died April 9, 1996, in a Norfolk nursing home.
He was a meteorologist for the National Weather Service and retired after 40 years.
Born in Norfolk, he was a member of Central Church of Christ of Norfolk and was Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Waters Garton of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Evelyn L. and her husband Larry Wilson of College Station, Texas; son, J. Mark and his wife Laurie Garton of Austintown, Ohio; sister, Lucille H. Garton of Springfield, Va.; two grandchildren, Rachel Wilson and James Rector Wilson.
He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred C. Garton Jr. and a sister, Helen W. Garton.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Andy T. Ritchie in Central Church of Christ. Burial will in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m.
