A Chesapeake obstetrician and gynecologist who pleaded guilty in November to two counts of tax evasion has been sentenced to confinement in his home and fined $40,000.
Dr. Javaid A. Perwaiz was found guilty of filing false personal and corporate tax returns for 1989. He faced a maximum penalty of six years in federal prison and a $500,000 fine. Federal District Judge Robert Dumar settled on four months of home confinement, five years of supervised probation and the fine.
``Avoidance of taxes is particularly abhorrent in light of the opportunities you have been afforded,'' Dumar told Perwaiz in announcing the sentence.
Prosecutors have estimated the tax loss to the government at $50,815-$70,000, records show.
The IRS investigation of Perwaiz started in late 1992 as the result of a tax audit. Investigators said Perwaiz classified several personal purchases during 1988 and 1989 as business expenses, then listed those claims as deductions on his corporate tax returns.
Among the frauds: listing a red Ferrari sports car as an ultrasound machine. Other personal purchases included Oriental rugs, china, porcelain fixtures, jewelry, furniture, stereo equipment, paintings, clothes, lingerie, shoes, suits, ties and dresses.
