FISH MADE CLEAN GETAWAY IN DIRTY WATER

Sunny weather along the Outer Banks brought out a few pier fishermen, but dirty, cold water inshore limited their success Wednesday.

Piers along the northern beaches reported only a few skates taken.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier and Avon Pier also caught a few skates. On Frisco Pier, fishing was slow during the morning. Later in the day, fishermen landed skates and a fair number of toadfish.

Surf-fishing from Corolla to Buxton was still slow because of unusually cold water temperatures.

Along the beach south of Cape Point, anglers caught scattered toadfish. A couple of big bluefish were also taken on cut bait. A 24-inch puppy drum was landed just south of the Cape late yesterday afternoon.

On Ocracoke Island scattered toadfish were landed by surf-fishermen. A 6-pound puppy drum was beached on the island's south end late Tuesday.

Charters off Oregon Inlet caught plenty of yellowfin tuna just below the 1250 rocks Tuesday. Several 40-pounders were landed, but most of the yellowfins weighed from 15 to 20 pounds.

The Hatteras fleet encountered excellent hook-and-release bluefin tuna-fishing on the ``Rock Pile.'' Yellowfin tuna action was good on the 280 rocks. Inside the Rock Pile, some good catches of king mackerel were reported.

The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 45 degrees. The water temperature at the Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island was 46 degrees. by CNB
