HOT ROD JAMOREE AT CITY PARK TO RAISE FUNDS TO FIGHT CANCER

The Chesapeake Hot Rod Jamoree will be held Saturday at Chesapeake City Park with a full program of events and more than 450 cars on display.

``There is definitely something for everyone,'' said Mark Carey, Chesapeake artist and founder of the annual event, which began last year to raise money for the Sharon Carey Medical Scholarship Fund.

``It's all free,'' Carey said. ``But we would like to have all the donations we can get so we can not only do this again next year but keep on fighting cancer so that loved ones are not taken before their time.''

Sharon Carey, Mark's wife, died several years ago after a battle with leukemia. Later Mark and Sheriff John R. Newhart created the car show to raise money for the Sharon Carey Medical Scholarship Fund.

Carey said the scholarship fund will help assist a student from Chesapeake or children of employees of Norfolk Naval Shipyard with their medical education.

Registration will begin at 6 a.m., and the first activities begin at 9 a.m.

Last year about $10,000 was raised as more than 5,000 people enjoyed the car show, music, games and food in the park.

The car show is open to hot rods, custom cars, classic cars, restored cars and even new cars.

Race car driver Jeff Scarboro will be on the field with his one-of-a-kind early model Ford Mustang, which he races in national meets. Scarboro said the 1,800-horsepower engine can hit 175 miles per hour in 7 seconds.

Townes Entertainment's Monster Car Crushing Show, which includes Bone Shaker, the Car Crushing Harley-Davidson, and Battron, the tank/transformer car crushing robot, will perform for free, but donations will be accepted.

High Tide, Roanoke's Fat Daddy and Chesapeake's own Bobby Messano and his NBO Band (New Blues Orchestra) will perform during the show.

Other activities will include health care information, antique tractor demonstrations, a caricature artist, raffles, T-shirts, awards, prizes and a 40-feet-long battleship float from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. There will also be an auto flea market.

The Blue Knights motorcycle club, Conte's Skate Board Team, the Chesapeake Fire Department, Chesapeake Bay Cloggers, the Chesapeake Sky Divers and a U.S. Air Force mini-jet will provide action, demonstrations and excitement throughout the day.

`` While you are having a great time,'' Carey said, ``you are also helping in the fight against cancer.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo courtesy of TOWNES ENTERTAINMENT
