The lifetime papers and memorabilia of the late Warren Burger, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1969 to 1986, were donated Friday to the College of William and Mary.
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, chancellor of the college, announced the gift at a meeting of W&M's board of visitors. Burger preceded Thatcher as chancellor after his retirement.
The Burger collection, which includes more than 2 million items and has been valued at $7 million, will be housed in W&M's Swem Library. It will triple the college's current collection of 1 million manuscripts and is envisioned as the centerpiece of a new special collections wing at the library.
``This is a magnificent collection which places William and Mary among a select group of research libraries which have been the recipients of major manuscript collections,'' said Nancy H. Marshall, dean of university libraries at the college.
The collection was given to W&M by Burger's son, Wade A. Burger. by CNB
