NORFOLK FORCE [IN LIBERIA]

NORFOLK FORCE

Four Norfolk-based ships are headed to Liberia: the Guam, a

helicopter carrier; the Trenton, an amphibious transport ship; the

Conolly, a destroyer; and the Portland, a dock landing ship.

Also going is the Big Horn, an oiler based in the Mediterranean

Sea. All the ships were in the Mediterranean on Thursday.

Aboard those vessels would be about 1,800 Marines from the 22nd

Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and another group

of about 1,800 sailors. The ships are carrying about 20 helicopters,

including the Navy's Sea Knight, which would be used to evacuate

people; Marine Hueys and Super Cobra gunships.
