FARMER'S MARKET - Portsmouth again will try to re-establish a viable farmer's market Downtown.
The staff at the city's Economic Development Department expects to open a tent for vendors on First Street over the Downtown Tunnel July 3.
In addition to vegetables and fruit, the city also would encourage watermen to pull their boats up to the waterfront to sell fish and other seafood.
Truck farmers and watermen in Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina have been contacted by Economic Development representatives.
The market will stay open until Oct. 27 on a regular basis.
NEW DRUG STORE - Rite Aid is proceeding with plans to build a $1 million store on London Boulevard between Elm Avenue and Armstrong Street.
The company plans to buy the entire block, which would ease access to a drive-in window.
The new store would replace a smaller store across the street in London Plaza.
Meanwhile, the Vision 2005 plan calls for widening Elm Avenue from two to four lanes between London Boulevard and High Street and for opening the cul de sacs on Armstrong Street and Primrose Lane.
At a recent Vision 2005 meeting, Dan Evans said Evans Electric Co., now fronting on Elm in the block that will be widened, will expand its facilities on High Street. The company's sales counter will be moved to a building facing High Street.
PIZZA OPENING - Chanello's Pizza has come to Portsmouth.
The company has opened at 3200 High St. in Midtown in a space occupied for many years by a High's ice cream store.
An official opening ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Monday with Mayor Gloria Webb cutting the ribbon.
Chanello's has 32 other locations in the region, including one in Western Branch, but this is its first store within the city limits. by CNB
