There are a lot of complaints about slow bowlers on the lanes, both from management and from participants.
Late leagues often fail to get started at the proper time because some bowlers in earlier leagues take longer than necessary.
And when finishing time gets later and later, many bowlers are reluctant to re-sign for the league the next season. The result can be a decrease in bowlers and lost lineage for the center.
Bowlers themselves complain more about those who hold up action than they do about those who bowl out in front of them.
Actually, there are penalties for slow bowling in both league and tournament play. But rarely are they enforced.
Both ABC and WIBC have an unreasonable delay rule that calls for forfeiture of a match. Generally, it is left to leagues themselves to ward off slow bowling with their own rule, which might call for a zero for a bowler in a particular frame.
To my knowledge, this penalty has never been inflicted locally.
The pros have a different rule.
Skee Foremsky is believed to be the first offender on the Pro Bowlers Tour to be called for the violation.
Back in 1990, at the tour's Hammer Senior Open, Foremsky was in the televised championship match against Les Schissler.
Foremsky reeled off six consecutive strikes. When he took an unusually long amount of time on the approach in getting ready for his next delivery, he was stopped and flagged with a 5-pin penalty for the delay.
And did the infraction upset Foremsky?
He stepped back on the lane and pitched strike No. 7.
He finished with 242 (247 before the penalty took away five pins) and won the game against Schissler.
Bowler of the Week honors go to youth tenpin bowler Donnie Glover.
The 19-year-old Glover shattered the house record at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven for youth bowlers with a three-game 766.
He backed up games of 248, 251 and 267, soaring 199 pins over average for the series. He averages a solid 189.
``I was thinking I might roll a 300 in that last game and I would miss my 800 series by just one pin,'' said Glover.
It was the first time Glover had gone over 700.
