Velma B. Poynter, 69, of the 800 block of Custis Ave., died April 13, 1996, in Portsmouth.
Mrs. Poynter was born in Sanford, Fla., and was retired from King's Department Store as a manager after 24 years. She was a 1944 graduate of Deep Creek High School and loved to travel and crochet.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer Poynter Sr.; a daughter, Margaret A. Hebert of Norfolk; three sons, Harold D. Poynter and Elmer Poynter Jr., both of Chesapeake and Harry K. Poynter of Edgewood, Md.; two sisters, Thelma Howell of Portsmouth and Delma Allen of Chesapeake; a brother, Charlie J. Bell of Ruther Glen, Va.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Enoch J. Bell.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Neal Sasser. The family will be at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Kidney Fund.
