Eighteen motorists were arrested and charged with driving under the influence during a weekend of stepped-up checkpoints and patrols.
State police, as well as area police officers, participated in Campaign Safe and Sober, an education and enforcement program that focuses on drunken driving, speeding and seat-belt violations, said State Police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame.
Checkpoints were located at the foot of the James River Bridge in Isle of Wight Friday night, and on Shore Drive at two sites - one in Norfolk, the other in Virginia Beach.
Police in Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk participated with stepped-up patrols, Van Dame said.
In addition to drunken driving arrests, motorists were charged with offenses ranging from possession of drugs and concealed weapons to driving with suspended licenses.
More than 200 traffic summons were issued, including four for violations of child safety restraints.
