A Smithfield man was killed in a single-car accident over the weekend after failing to stop for police and leading the officer on a short, high-speed chase.
David B. Norman, 36, of the 19000 block of White Oak Drive died after his station wagon ran off the road into a ditch and rolled over several times, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said. Norman was thrown from the vehicle.
The accident happened in the 3400 block of Lake Prince Drive about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
The pursuit started at Pitchkettle and Kings Fork roads several miles from the crash site after Officer W.T. Phippins observed Norman's 1977 Dodge Aspen station wagon being driven erratically.
Norman ran a stop light at Pruden Boulevard, then began driving about 60 miles an hour on the rural roads, Simpkins said.
