Hornsby is a Williamsburg resident and multiple Grammy winner. His hits include ``The Way It Is,'' ``The Valley Road'' and ``Fields of Gray.''
He often played keyboards with the Grateful Dead between 1990 and the group's demise in 1995. His most recent albums, ``Harbor Lights'' and ``Hot House,'' find Hornsby leaning toward a more jazz-inflected sound influenced by the likes of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans.
The singer/songwriter has long been involved in regional issues. He has been a vocal champion of the Amphitheater. His most recent Hampton Roads appearance was a May 1995 Harrison Opera House benefit for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Hornsby was named 1992's Virginian of the Year by the Virginia Press Association.
Chicago and Crosby, Stills and Nash have sustained careers of more than 25 years each. Chicago is noted for a long string of jazz/rock albums that produced numerous hit singles in the '70s.
Their most recent release, ``Night and Day,'' is a big band-style effort. Crosby, Stills and Nash gained notoriety at the first Woodstock festival and have toured steadily since reuniting in the early '80s.
The Amphitheater is also set to host concerts by superstars such as the Eagles, Rod Stewart and Jimmy Buffett this summer. It is owned by the City of Virginia Beach and operated by the Cellar Door Companies. ILLUSTRATION: Bruce Hornsby's inaugural show at the Amphitheater will be on
