HONORS AND AWARDS

TOP HONOR FOR MAYOR: Suffolk Mayor S. Chris Jones has been selected as the 1995 Virginia Retailer of the Year by the Virginia Retail Merchants Association. He will be honored by the Association on May 3 in Old Town Alexandria.

A member of the Suffolk City Council since 1986, Jones is the owner and pharmacist of Bennetts Creek Pharmacy. He opened his pharmacy in 1985 and in 1995, moved to a new shopping center location, quadrupled his square footage, and expanded his retail business to include Home Health Care, greeting cards, gifts and collectibles, as well as a drive-through window service.

Nominated by the Junto Woman's Club of Suffolk, Jones's success as a retailer was important in the selection process for the state-wide honor, yet his contributions to the Suffolk community also were considered.

Mayor since 1992, Jones is a member of the North Suffolk Rotary Club, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, and has been a volunteer firefighter for the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department since age 16.

Jones received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia. He currently serves as a preceptor and clinical instructor through an externship program with MCV by working with senior pharmacy students who intern at his pharmacy.

JUDGE COMPLETES COURSE: Judge Robert E. Gillette of the General District Court in Suffolk has completed the Special Court Jurisdiction - Advanced Course held recently at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nev.

The course is designed for recently appointed judges in courts of limited jurisdiction. The focus is on high volume areas such as traffic, small claims, landlord-tenant, misdemeanors, and cases involving alcohol, drug abuse and domestic violence. The course also covers such topics as judicial immunity and liability, and increasing problem-solving abilities.

Located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, the National Judicial College was featured on ``60 Minutes'' as the leading continuing education center for trial judges. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
