THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT held two meetings with citizens of the community to discuss their concerns about the city as they prepare to elect new members to the City Council and the School Board.
The participants, selected at random, came from a variety of neighborhoods and backgrounds. No public officials were invited.
The broad questions raised by several Suffolk residents revolved around the city's commitment to planning for the growth that the city is already experiencing and that is sure to intensify.
Residents said they want city officials to come up with a long-term plan for the city that would address such things as where the city should develop, how the city pays for that growth, and how Suffolk can have a balance between residential and industrial growth. Many said they want a plan that allows them to give their input and one that city officials stick to once it is completed.
The newspaper asked the seven City Council candidates to share their vision for Suffolk. Their responses are published here today.
The City Council election is May 7. Three council seats, in the Nansemond, Whaleyville and Sleepy Hole boroughs, are up for grabs.
Vice Mayor Curtis R. Milteer in Whaleyville is running unopposed.
Responses from Nansemond Borough candidates will be published Sunday. MEMO: FORUM
