Donnie W. Chavis, of the 5400 block of Tidewater Drive, slipped quietly into the arms of Jesus April 16, 1996.
She was retired from Norfolk Public Schools after 29 years of service. She was a native of Norfolk and the widow of Claude E. Chavis Sr. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by five daughters, Jacqueline C. Robertson and Claudette Chavis, both of Norfolk, Charlene Chavis and Patricia C. Perkins, both of Chesapeake, Annette C. Hall of Virginia Beach; four sons, Claude E. Chavis Jr. and Elder George L. Chavis, both of Virginia Beach, Donald Ray Chavis of Chesapeake, and Roland N. Chavis of Portsmouth; her mother, Mrs. Maggie White; two sisters, Mabel W. Fields and Beatrice W. Baucham, both of Norfolk; a brother, Columbus L. White of Norfolk; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four daughters-in-law; a son-in-law; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Donnie White.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday, April 20, by Dr. Johnnie L. White in First Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. Graves Funeral Home is in charge. The family will be at 240 Iroquois Road, Virginia Beach, the home of Annette C. Hall.
