NORFOLK POLICE UNION ENDORSES CANDIDATES

The Norfolk Police Union, Local 412, International Brotherhood of Police Officers, has announced its endorsement of Charles D. Grant and William E. Swindell Jr. in the May 7 election for the Norfolk City Council's two superward seats.

In Superward 6, Grant is running against incumbent Mason C. Andrews, Fred G. Bashara and E. Toles Summers.

In Superward 7, Swindell is running against Daun S. Hester, Algie T. Howell Jr., Daniel E. Montague, H. Marks Richard and Horace T. ``Tommy'' White. The Rev. Joseph N. Green Jr. is stepping down from his seat in Superward 7.

The police union said Grant, ``having been the former chief of police for our city, brings a perspective with him that police officers understand. We believe that Mr. Grant will monitor city spending. We believe he will continue to be tough on crime. We believe he will be sensitive to the needs of all the citizens he represents. Mr. Grant's past service record and dedication to our city are reason enough to give Charles D. Grant our support.''

Of Swindell, the union said ``Wes has pledged his support to a safer Norfolk and more fiscally responsible city government.''
