Nine young women have been selected as princesses and princesses royale for this fall's Neptune Festival.
The women will participate in festivities as King Neptune XXIII Thomas R. Frantz reigns over the annual event. This year's Neptune Festival with its many social, charitable and sporting events will be Sept. 15 through 29.
The princesses are selected by the festival committee each spring. They are chosen on the basis of high scholastic ratings, school and civic organization involvement and personality. Three princesses royale, will also serve on the court for this year's festival.
The attendants will accompany King Neptune XXIII at all official appearances of the royal court. In addition, they will participate in other area events throughout the coming year.
The 1996 Princesses are:
Laine Brammer, daughter of David and Brenda Harlow, attends First Colonial High School. She is the junior class president and was elected a sophomore class homecoming princess. A Virginia Beach General Hospital volunteer, Laine plans to attend medical school after earning a college degree in biology.
Marisa Ferrera, daughter of Isabelo and Florence Ferrera, is a junior at Bayside High School. Marisa maintains a 4.0 grade point average and has been named an All-American Scholar. She is a varsity cheerleading captain and serves as the Key Club treasurer. Upon graduation, Marisa plans to pursue a career in medicine.
Alicia Ingram, daughter of Robert and Sally Ingram, attends Cox High School. A member of the National Honor Society, Alicia plays varsity softball and is a cheerleader. She plans a career in teaching or optometry.
Beth McKinney, daughter of Tom and Gail McKinney, is a junior at Green Run High School. This year's junior class president, Beth is involved in both music and drama at Green Run. A member of both the marching and concert bands, she is also active in the thespians and all school dramatic productions.
Christie Meiggs, daughter of Michael and Barbara Meiggs, attends Kellam High School and recently attended the Model United Nations as a delegate. The current SCA secretary, Christie plans a career in law and politics.
Sarah Smith, daughter of Mary Smith, attends Princess Anne High. A member of The Virginian-Pilot Academic Team, Sarah is the junior class reporter. She is a varsity cheerleader and a member of the varsity softball team. Upon graduation, Sarah hopes to attend Princeton to major in chemical engineering.
Princesses royale are:
Kati Barefoot, daughter of Ken and Kathi Barefoot, is a junior at Princess Anne High School. She participates in cheerleading as well as varsity field hockey. The junior class treasurer, she plans a career in the theater after attending college.
Sarah Lynn Darnell, daughter of James Darnell and Marjorie Darnell, attends Cox High School. A member of the Forensic, Latin and French clubs, Sarah Lynn competes on the Cox swim team and plays softball and volleyball. After attending college, she plans a career in medicine.
Shirley Morris, daughter of Diane Talbot and Robert Morris, attends Cox High School. With a 4.0 grade-point average, Shirley is a member of The Virginian-Pilot Scholastic Achievement Team and a member of the National Honor Society. She also participates in the Cox Coquettes and the Key Club. After graduation, Shirley plans to attend college.
Also serving on the court are tritons who accompany King Neptune at official appearances.
They include:
Lee Bandy, a certified public accountant and partner in Warren, Bandy & Eley, has served four years as chairman of the Neptune Festival Hospitality Committee and is the 1996 treasurer of the SPCA.
Randy Bregman is executive vice president of Skip's Sports Equipment and a member of the YMCA Hilltop and Life-Saving Museum of Virginia boards of directors.
Donald H. Clark, president of Clark and Stant, is chairman of the board of Tidewater Health Care.
Paul Michels, president of Coastal Video Communications, is a member of the advisory board of Princess Anne Bank.
Dr. Mitchell B. Miller of Tidewater Medical Group/Princess Anne Family Practice and a member of the Virginia Beach Health Services Advisory Board, donates his services to the Beach Health Clinic, a free clinic for the poor and uninsured.
Robert S. Miller III, president and CEO of MSA, a civil engineering surveying and environmental science firm, has been president of Virginia Beach Special Olympics since 1985. He is also an elder at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
