Richard Sanford ``Dick'' Griffith, 80, died April 17, 1996, in Stuart Circle Hospital, Richmond.
He was a native of Nansemond County, Va., and a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church, Suffolk. He was a retired bookkeeper. He was the first American to play the organ of Westminster Cathedral for the King of England; he was the church organist for Samaria Baptist Church from 1960 to 1985; he was a member of the Richmond Rose Society and the president of the Hanover Master Gardener Association; he was the horticultural column reporter for the Herald Progress; and a member of numerous other organizations. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was predeceased by his parents, Minnie Duke and Richard T. Griffith. He is survived by two nephews, Robert P. ``Bobby'' Baines and R. Thomas Baines, both of Suffolk; three great-nephews, V. Ray Russell, Steven M. Russell and Gary T. Baines, all of Suffolk; one great-great-niece; and five great-great-nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by Dr. Willis I. Dowling in Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk. Burial is in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m and other times at 3025 Whitemarsh Road, Suffolk. Memorial contributions may be made to the Simpson Scholarship Fund, 1891 Cypress Chapel Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
