Elsie Daughtrey Godfrey, 89, of Great Neck Road, died April 18, 1996.
Mrs. Godfrey, a native of Nansemond County, Va., was the daughter of Jasper and Susie Daughtrey and the widow of N.B. Godfrey Jr. She attended Longwood College, and then taught school in Essex County and Princess Anne County prior to her marriage. She was a longtime member of Scott Memorial United Methodist Church and the Great Neck Garden Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Godfrey Ray of Norfolk; her granddaughter, Alicia Godfrey Ray of Virginia Beach; her grandson, John Matthew Ray of Radford, Va.; four sisters, Dorothy D. Anderson of Richmond, Edith D. Rawls and Nell D. Howell of Suffolk, and Ida D. Graves of Lacey Spring, Va.; and two brothers, E. Hunter Daughtrey and Jasper Daughtrey Jr. of Suffolk. She was the most loving mother and grandmother anyone could want, and a friend to all children. We will miss her so.
A church service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott United Methodist Church by the Rev. Manning Harrell. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. There will be a visitation in the funeral home today from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements.
