NAVY ROTC UNITS VIE FOR NATIONAL HONORS

The nation's best Junior Navy ROTC units, vying for top honors in military drills, academic and athletic events, wind up two days of competition today at Norfolk State University in a national meet sponsored by the Hampton Roads Naval ROTC Unit.

Eighteen units from 11 states and about 750 junior cadets are entered in the competition. They come from as far away as California, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, New York and Delaware. Two area schools are represented: Princess Anne and Green Run high schools in Virginia Beach.

``This is an exciting meet, which features the very best Navy Junior ROTC units from around the country,'' said Capt. Keith H. Larson, commanding officer of the Hampton Roads Naval ROTC unit, which comprises students at Hampton University, Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University.

The units competed Friday in uniform and drill inspections, including armed and unarmed drills and color guide.

Today, they will have a full day of academic and athletic competition. An Olympic-style ceremonial parade of athletics will begin at 9:15 a.m. on the NSU Track and Field Complex.

A national victor will be recognized by the NJROTC program managers and national representatives from the National Navy League Organization at an award's ceremony. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photo]
