BUS COLLISION INJURES THREE STUDENTS

A collision involving a Smithfield Middle School bus and a tractor-trailer left three students with minor injuries Friday, an Isle of Wight County school official said.

The accident happened about 10 a.m. near the Norfolk end of the Midtown Tunnel, said Alexander H. Decker, assistant superintendent. The 23 sixth-grade students were on a field trip to Nauticus, the National Maritime Center.

As the bus left the tunnel, the driver's side mirror hit the mirrors of an approaching tractor-trailer. As a result, the mirror on the bus and the lower window immediately behind the bus driver shattered. The truck did not stop, Decker said.

The bus driver, Denise Hilton, drove to Nauticus, where police, rescue personnel and school officials were called.

Fourteen students were struck by flying glass. All were examined by paramedics and released. Three sustained minor cuts.

Damage to the bus was estimated to be less than $1,000.
